Check out this wonderful article about 96 year old Kris Sims…and you thought you were too old???
FORT WALTON BEACH — Kris Sams knows a thing or two about perseverance.
At 96 years old, she doesn’t let her age or her walker keep her from volunteering at Fort Walton Beach Medical Center every Monday morning.
“The nicest part of getting to work (at the hospital) is getting to know the wonderful people,” said Sams, who spent many years in the gift shop. “I hated to leave it. I have to peek in there every once in a while.”
Sams has volunteered at the hospital for 25 years, working in a number of different areas. These days her main job is sorting patient mail. Read More…
Have you heard this one before? “Oh, I am way to old to start a new business” “Oh, I used to do this or that but I am too old for that now” “Oh, that’s for you young ones” etc etc etc
You know what those are? Excuses!!!
And you know what excuses are? Lies!!! Well planned lies we tell ourselves so that we don’t have to take responsibility.
This amazing woman, doesn’t even see anything special in what she is doing. She just does it. Gets up, picks up her walker, doesn’t whine about the weather, just goes about her day. That’s it!
You might see her on the street walking to the hospital where she volunteers and think “poor old lady, look at her walking all that way. She should just be sitting somewhere, retired”
But you’d be so way off the mark. You know what happens when you “just sit somewhere, retired”??? You begin to die!
This woman is 96 years old!! 96!!! Most of us can only hope to live that long. But she is still alive and not just alive, but LIVING.
Volunteering at the hospital, gives her life meaning and purpose. And keeps her busy and active. She’s been doing this for 25 years!
So let’s bless Kris Sams, and let’s learn from her:
– Get up, Get out of bed and do what you are supposed to do. No excuses!!
– Don’t complain! or think that things are beneath you. Look at her, she has done every kind of job at the hospital, and now she is sorting mail. Think that is too low for you? Ok, but look at the smile on her face. Do you look like that?? Nothing that helps another is too small or too low. It’s a blessing in any size.
– Age is nothing but a number. You are only as old as you think you are. Don’t stop living!! ever!! Just get up and keep going! If you really have to stop one kid of activity because the body can’t do it any more, fine…move on to the next. Just don’t stop!
– Give!!! This is a big one. Give!! Give!! Give!! and then Give some more. The more you give, the more you will have. Don’t hoard your money, your possessions, your time, your energy…Give! Give generously! Share! You will have so much more than you ever dreamed you could have.
And then, when you are in your 90’s or more, you can look around you and say “I am Blessed!”
This is what I wish for you all!
I love you.
